What does it mean to conform?

1. to act in accordance or harmony; comply (usually fol. by to): to conform to rules.

2.to act in accord with the prevailing standards, attitudes, practices, etc., of society or a group: One has to conform in order to succeed in this company. 3. to be or become similar in form, nature, or character. 4.to be in harmony or accord. 5.to comply with the usages of an established church, esp. the Church of England.

From this lecture, I learnt that the more you consume the less you live, the more you allow yourself to be spoon fed the more  you fall into conformity.  We build our persona through what we consume, we assume that we are individualist by wearing a brand because we are taught to think that we would be unique if gave into it. However, we are just clones of consumerism.  So seeing as many of us do buy branded things we are at risks of “not living”.  Although we can argue that without certain branded items, we are also “not living” take technology for example. Without the latest social networks, phones, computers etc, we are seen as at risk of being pushed out the social circle and being socially abandoned because individualist refuse to accept such forms of communication. Thus inable to follow the fast pace of this new age life as we continue to develop new ways of technology.

During the lecture we were shown a series of videos. This particular one shows the power of conformity and how peer pressure affects people. I found it really amusing and would have loved to see how I would have reacted to a lift full of people that faced the wrong way. During further research I came across “The Asch experiment” which showed conformity and explained that it is part of human nature to follow the majority. I really do agree that conformity can be a spectacle, people would rather make foolish choices than follow their instincts.

We were also shown tons of bull fighting and extreme sports videos. I think that this supports my views that you can find something spectacular in anything! Even in something dangerous.
